Summary / Abstract:

ENSt. Hyacinth’s Chapel in the Church of Sts. Philip and Jacob is commemorative in nature. Its decor was created in the first half of 1944 in preparation for the commemoration of the 350th anniversary of the saint’s canonisation. The ribbed vault segments are richly ornamented, and four medallions in each of them present the most important scenes from St. Hyacinth’s life: St. Dominic sending St. Hyacinth to the missions, St. Hyacinth arriving in Krakow, St. Hyacinth rescuing the monstrance and statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and St. Hyacinth s apotheosis. The cycle was created by Jerzy Hoppen (1891-1969), who was a famous artist, photographer, restorer, and pedagogue in interwar Vilnius, during the Nazi occupation, as the front was rapidly approaching the city. Hoppen had already worked in the Church of St. Philip and Jacob earlier in the 1940s: he had renovated various parts of its wall decoration. This church was particularly important and close to the artist, because he used to visit it as an ordinary parishioner when he lived on Kaštonų Street. In 1924, the artist rendered his admiration of the architecture of the sanctuary in a copper engraving from the cycle "Old Vilnius” (1924-1927). Later he repeatedly photographed his beloved church both as an exceptional monument of Vilnius architecture and as a permanent background of the “Kaziukas Fair”, which is held annually in and around Lukiškių Square.
