Summary / Abstract:

ENEstablished in 1922, Vytautas Magnus University celebrates its centenary in 2022. From the very beginning, philosophy and philosophical studies were prominent among the other sciences. They were conducted during the years 1922-1940 on The Faculty of Theology and Philosophy and the Faculty of Humanities. The member of the first one, prof. Stasys Šalkauskis became even the last rector of the University before the soviet occupation in 1940. Between 1940 and 1950, under Soviet and Nazi occupation, the University changed its structure several times, and philosophical studies were transferred to Vilnius. In 1989 Vytautas Magnus University was restored as the first independent higher education institution in the Soviet Union. In independent Lithuania became one of the leading Universities, continuing, not without problems, the traditions of philosophical studies.
