Summary / Abstract:

ENThe demand for nautical tourism is growing rapidly worldwide, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, when priorities of wellness, personal well-being and sustainability became more prominent. In the Klaipėda region, sustainable maritime tourism is a priority sector, the development of which is given special attention in strategic documents and action plans. Marine tourism, based on the natural coastal and water resources, economically viable innovative and high-quality cultural, wellness, niche, nature, urban and business tourism services, is supported by the horizontal priorities of the regional innovation, creative industries and wellness network. Sailing activities and related services are an integral part of maritime tourism, which can be developed in line with the principles of sustainable tourism. Unfortunately, there is very little research in Lithuania on sustainable nautical tourism, so the article analyses publications and research by foreign authors in the context of sustainable maritime tourism and presents examples from other coastal countries. The analysis of scientific publications shows the importance of networking and cooperation in the development of sustainable maritime projects: cooperation between sailors and marinas and legal regulatory authorities, and the importance of support for small and medium-size businesses. Although the strategic documents of the Klaipėda region give priority to nautical tourism, based on the information provided by foreign authors, it is possible to see how widespread sailing tourism is in other countries and regions, and what development indicators have been achieved. The research methods used were: literature analysis and qualitative research (consumer survey). The qualitative survey showed that the development of sustainable nautical tourism requires the creation of additional services related to sailing, such as short educational guided sailing trips lasting several hours, sailing lectures and training courses, and maritime culture education. These additional services would encourage greater interest in sailing, and incorporate these experiences into holiday planning, and corporate and educational events. Most of the respondents were in favour of the fact that participation in practical sailing builds a team spirit, and agreed that sailing should be tried by most, if not all, people. The respondents indicated that digital marketing tools are the best communication channels, but the recommendation rate of other users is also quite high. The research showed that regions where the concept of sustainable maritime tourism is a priority for tourism development, where there is support from the local authorities, and where there are opportunities to participate in international cooperation projects, have more sustainable yachting tourism, and there is an increase in the supply of services to the public. Key words: nautical tourism, sustainable tourism, yachting, sailing tourism. [From the publication]
