Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article discusses the transformation process – from Lithuania’s entry into the USSR in 1940, which was accompanied by large-scale industrialization, to its exit from it in 1990, a transition from a planned-directive economy to a free market, resulted in Lithuania’s accession to the European Union in 2004. The outcomes of its membership in the EU are explored as well. Using factual and statistical data, the author argues that the basis of the current economic achievements of Lithuania is the material base of industry and agriculture created in the Soviet period and also a well thought-through privatization procedure carried out without haste and under strict public control. An important role belongs to the subjective factor in terms of the activities of the leaders of Lithuania, primarily A. Snechkus and A. Brazauskas. All above-mentioned factors allowed the country, which lacks mineral and energy resources, to surpass almost all post-socialist states of Europe in economic development. Key words: industrialization of the Soviet period, transition period, transformation of economy, European Union. [From the publication]
