Summary / Abstract:

LTJanas Brunonas Bułhakas yra laikomas žymiausiu XX a. pirmosios pusės Vilniaus fotografu. ENM. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art possesses a significant part (313 exhibits) of Jan Bulhak’s – the most famous Vilnius photographer of the first half of the 20th century – legacy. The largest in amount and the most important photography collection reflecting Vilnius and its art monuments includes images taken before and during the First World War. Photographs from this period (143 exhibits) entered the museum from the collection of the famous interwar diplomat and collector Vladas Daumantas. They are stored in the museum’s department of photography and documentation. The photographs, besides Vilnius, feature other nearby areas – Trakai, Užutrakis, Kreva, Nowógrodek, Mir, Nesvizh, and some territories of today’s Belarus, as well as the suburbs of Vilnius, the surrounding villages and their natural environment. Although the majority of the most significant photographs is stored in the mentioned department of the museum, the review of J. Bulhak’s creation is supplemented with the exhibits stored in other branches of the museum. Of mention should be A. and P. Galaunės House which has 45 photographs and postcards with images of Vilnius’ buildings and their fragments, as well as photographed art pieces by famous Lithuanian artists. The department of folk art and A. Žmuidzinavičius Memorial Museum have in their storages J. Bulhak’s unique photographs from the first Lithuanian folk art exhibitions of wood carvings and textile works. The sets also include items from the first art exhibitions – the photographed paintings or sculptures that have entered the catalogues of the above-mentioned exhibitions. J. Bulhak as a portraitist is perhaps less known, however, the museum’s collections include portraiture photographs of painter Antanas Žmuidzinavičius, art historian, a pioneer of Lithuanian professional museology Paulius Galaunė and his wife Adelė, all of them taken at J. Bulhak’s studio in Vilnius. The museum also stores postcards with the master’s photographed views. They were published in various printing houses and in different periods of time: some of them in the interwar Vilnius or in Warsaw, others in the former temporary capital Kaunas, and even during the Soviet era. The department of numismatics also has several postcards recorded by J. Bulhak. This article reviews the photographer’s diverse creative legacy which is spread across various departments and branches of the museum. [From the publication]
