ENThe articles considers why the novel Lygiosios trunka akimirką by Icchokas Meras did not loose the intrigue of reading; a few outlooks of interpretation are tried to open which can be interesting in the comparativistic approach. The original idea of a novel is referred to the structure of a chess game and the reality of the writing and internal discussion between the philosophical positions (whether an individual has a free will or he is just a figure in hands of fate) is shaped accordingly. Existential and humanistic conception of the author can also be seen in the story about Abraham’s, the ancestor of the Jews, efforts to save his children, the story is ‘inscribed’ in the novel. Links with the narrative Giesmių giesmė (The Gospel of Gospels) by Šolom Aleichem are much more important for the linear plane of the story; the quotations form the narrative expands the field of meanings in the novel and gives the story about love between two young people in a ghetto a dimension of universality. At the end of the article a conclusion is made that a game in different planes of text reality determines liveliness of the writing and the effect of meaning, known as the truth.
