Summary / Abstract:

ENDuring the interwar, Lithuanian advertising was mostly developed in periodic press; advertisements in periodic press became a part of everyday life for various social classes. Visual side of graphical design of advertising strongly affected consciousness of consumers, but artistic and aesthetic value of it often was treated as an instrument of achieving commercial objectives. Thus, more interesting artistic solutions were chosen in exceptional cases only. In response to the requirement of the market to constantly change images of advertisements, advertising “sunk” the influence of various styles. Reaching various consumers, it accustomed viewers to new artistic forms of that time though the communication means were adapted. Based on the advertisements in periodic press, the article discusses the distribution of visual mass culture in the interwar Lithuania. It reviews goods and services offered to Lithuanian consumers in the market of the 3rd-4th decade, and states what items and how where displayed in advertising, and who worked in the area of graphical design. In addition, it delivers examples that reflect general changes in commercial graphical design of the beginning of the 20th century, the development of advertising strategies, and the influence of the advertising on the formation of consumer needs.
