ENSimulation-based teaching is a way of teaching in which a student can apply knowledge in a practical virtual space after listening to theoretical material. In the field of training, there are not enough resources and opportunities to ensure that every learner has the opportunity to start learning with a real vehicle immediately, making the simulator a great alternative. This method is widely used in ship navigation. Students can learn the proper operation and management of transport without the risk of property damage. That is why more practical sessions should be included in the student ship management training methodology. Teaching practice states that the most effective teaching method is the use of theoretical knowledge immediately after receiving it and by teaching others. This method is not always a practical implementation so it is possible to use the second most effective teaching method: to practice by doing. A study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of a practical task using a navigation simulator to learn and use theoretical material. The research sample is 20 students from the Lithuanian Maritime Academy. When planning the study of effectiveness of a navigation simulator learning, a questionnaire was developed to find out whether presenting a theory and using a navigation simulator provides better information absorption than simply presenting learning material. To find out, it was decided to ask the same questions before and after the navigation simulator task. The resulting questionnaire was posted on the Internet. This makes it easier to gather the necessary information, organize it and avoid contact in view of the SARS-CoV-2 situation. The results of the study revealed that students answered the theoretical questions of ship management 27% better after the practical sailing task. After the research, it can be stated that the teaching method - by setting out the theory and later using it in practice, is effective. After the assignment, a re-survey revealed that all students who participated in the study rated the practical sessions positively.
