Summary / Abstract:

ENThe COVID-19 pandemic affected a wide range of activities, including education. Changes have also taken place in the field of in-service teacher training. The activity of the Alytus education staff development/learning department (AESDLD) is to organize trainings and improve the qualification of school heads, their deputies, heads of departments, teachers, members of other educational institutions’ communities, with the help of lecturers from other research institutions and businesses; conducting theoretical and practical training according to identified needs; conducting and disseminating good practice events, sharing experiences with colleagues and taking over the experience of others. The article analyzes the changes that have taken place in the activities of the AESDLD due to the COVID-19 pandemic in organizing the professional development of teachers. The aim of the study was to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the professional development of teachers. The first task was to review how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the communities of foreign and Lithuanian general education institutions. The biggest challenge is the transition to distance learning. Most educators in Europe, including Lithuania, were not faced with the organization of distance learning while studying and working, and were not ready to switch to distance learning. There was a lack of information, guidance and tools. Difficulties in the transition to distance learning have been due to increased workload and tensions due to insufficient digital literacy levels of students and teachers, problems in developing or adapting teaching materials to distance learning, and objective assessment of student progress. There was a lack of competent lecturers who mastered digital technologies. The second task is to find out the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the in-service teacher training activities carried out by the AESDLD. The article analyzes the data of the AESDLD activity reports for 2016–2020. Data from previous years are compared with the 2020 pandemic year. The following aspects of change were selected: in-service training events (number, form, topics), participants in in-service training events (number, category). The following research methods were used: comparative analysis, linkage synthesis, analysis of report data. The study found that the COVID-19 pandemic had virtually no effect on the number of events organized by the AESDLD. The main form of in-service training during the period under review was seminars. A particularly large number of seminars were held on the practical use of Microsoft Office 365 programs. Events on the use of information technology accounted for more than a third of teachers’ digital literacy seminars, courses and trainings. 2020 The number of participants in events aimed at improving digital literacy competence increased more than 4.5 times in 2019. 2020 no exhibitions or educational trips were organized. There has been a significant decline in good practice events. General education teachers remained the most active participants in the events.
