ENThe surviving manuscripts of the XXth century Lithuanian poet Maironis contain the revisions made on "Pavasario balsai" (The Voices of Spring; his collection of poems which was reprinted five times during the author’s lifetime). Since those revisions were made by the poet himself, the case of self-editing is being researched in the article. Focusing on the extant drafts particularly, the textual variation within the short fragments (a verse or a word phrase) of two different poems are analyzed by the means of microgenetic (as opposed to macrogenetic) research. Although the writing and self-revisions of Maironis might appear as chaotic or lacking any inner logic, the genetic approach helps to reveal the trends that the poet followed while editing his works. To arrive at this argument, first, I thoroughly deciphered and identified the very acts of self-editing, second, I interpreted and organized them into principles, schemes, that is, an overall model of self-editing (the avant-texte). As a corollary, I suggested that microgenetic changes in the poems analyzed might be approached as being made in a manner of “semantical generalization”. The latter concept might be explained as a tendency of editing by which a particular word, or a phrase, or even the whole poetical thought is being revised until the expression, which is finally being accepted, in comparison to the others, has the most universal semantical meaning. Since the generalization of semantics as the trend of self-editing was concluded while reconstructing the most intensely edited passages of Maironis’ poems, the application of the avant-texte principles itself also inspired a more general question, that is, whether the genetic reconstruction of textual variation is rather an act of re-interpretation or an actual re-construction of the very processes that the work of art was shaped by.
