ENThe article examines the changing perceptions of the Agreement of Kėdainiai in the Lithuanian historiography. The agreement, signed on 20 October 1655, ended the union between Lithuania and the Polish Crown. Polish scholars have always remained critical towards the agreement. On the contrary, Lithuanian historiographers tended to view the event more favorably, or entirely positively. The first known example of a favorable attitude towards the Agreement of Kėdainiai in Lithuanian historiography is from 1906. This view of the agreement can be found in a historiographic thesis from the 1930s, a time when relations between Poland and Lithuania had heavily deteriorated. After 1990, Lithuanian historiography was dominated by the view that the attempt at forming a union with Sweden was dictated by the extraordinary historical circumstances, and attempts to save Lithuania; but ultimately, the final form of the Agreement of Kėdainiai severely limited Lithuania’s sovereignty, as per terms to which Janusz Radziwiłł agreed.
