ENThree of the Marian monasteries in Marijampolė, Miroslavas and Igliauka were operating in the Diocese of Seinai (Augustavas). The largest of them was the monastery of Marijampolė, and the fewest of monks lived in the Igliauka Monastery. After the rebellion of 1863-1864 the monasteries in the Kingdom of Poland were being closed. In 1864 all the Marian monasteries outside the Seinai (Augustavas) Diocese were closed. A couple of years later, the Miroslavas and Igliauka monasteries were closed. Thus, the only functional monastery in Marijampolė was left where the monks from the closed Marian monasteries in the Kingdom of Poland were brought. Owing to the Tsarist rule prohibition to accept new members, Marijampolė Monastery started to perish, and finally, it was closed in 1904. Most of the data about the monks presented were taken from the annual Elenchus of the Diocese. However, not all Elenchus have been found. The data provided on the monks is therefore not full. Based on the data presented in the Elenchus, it was possible to determine the position and location of the monks. The monks were often moved from one monastery to another. [From the publication]
