ENVilnius Old Town suffered not only from the actions of the Second World War, but also of harmful political architectural solutions mad e by the post-war authorities; there had been destroyed the buildings of the Old Town which could have been undergoing repair. The former Vokiečių street was broadened in the Old Town, demolishing mor e than a half of buildings. Only in 1956 the State Committee of Construction and Architectural Affairs, its Inspection for Protection of Architectural Monuments of that time ordered to Prepare the project of Vilnius Old Town reconstruction for the Scientific Workshop of Restoration (SWR; scientific research adviser - K. Šešelgis, the authors - S. Lasavickas, J. Šeibokas, A. Raulinaitis). In 1958 this project was ready and it was based on historic, urban and architectural researches. Another project was ordered to the Institute of Town Planning and Construction. This "competition" of Projects has wo n the project of SWR due to its scientific level despite a political antipathy. In 1959 the Government of Soviet Lithuania confirmed it. Since then the protection of historic towns has started in Lithuania. Later there were being prepared the complex regeneration projects for separate quarters of Vilnius Old Town. In 1972 the regeneration of two quarters on Stiklių street was carried out. In 1973 the International Conference of ICOMOS took place in Vilnius. It was devoted to protection of historic towns and accomodation to the needs of new life. The analogous reconstruction-regeneration projects for Old Towns Kaunas, Klaipėda, Kėdainiai and a little bit later - Trakai were being prepared from 1960. In 1974 the second regeneration projec t of Vilnius Old Town was prepared.
