ENIn 1860-1914, fifteen photographers took pictures of Lithuanian castles (some authors of photographs are unknown). The famous authors who photographed these historical monuments were: A. Korzun, A. Swieykowski, J. Czechowicz, V. Zachartchik, and K. Brandel in the 19th century; S. F. Fleury at the end of the 19th-the beginning of the 20th centuries, and M. and L. Butkowscy (Boutkovsky Freres), A. Cynowiec (Cinovec), N. Ostankovic, T. Chodźko, J. Hermanowicz (Hermanovitch), J. Strazdas, A. Jurašaitis and J. Bułhak at the beginning of the 20th century. The photographs of Vilnius castles (especially the early ones before 1915) have been described in detail and published in various editions. Thus, the data about the Vilnius photographers and pictures of Gediminas castle are rather rich. Photographs of other castles are fewer. Detailed investigations could provide more information about them. In the early photographs, castles completed the general view of the city. J. Czechowicz was the first who took a close-up of the ruins of Gediminas castle. At the beginning of the 20th century, when cultural heritage became an object of greater interest, castles were photographed as individual historical monuments. The Gediminas castle (both its exterior and interior) was photographed in greatest detail by J. Bułhak in 1912-1914. Odd photographs of castles sometimes would appear in the periodicals of the then times. Only the “Vilnius Calendar for 1908” published a series of photographs with castles illustrating each month of the year.
