ENFor centuries, the witch has conveyed the notion of breaking taboos and of female menace2. According to the German researcher Joseph Hansen, some 60,000 fell victim to European witch-hunting3. In the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, every other witch was executed. In Blarus, i.e. in the Protestant part of Switzerland, the last execution of a witch took place in 1782, which means that the persecution of heresy real or suspected was by no means restricted under the Reformation. However, in Italy there was no persecution of magical practice which led to the stake, and in Russia witch-hunting has not been noticed at all. Today we can infer from the history of witch-hunting that any imagined group will easily be accused of witchcraft and of subversive activities and be exposed to persecution and tribulation.
