Summary / Abstract:

ENLiterary criticism was mainly textual in Lithuania at the beginning of the first post-Soviet decade. Such situation could be explained differently. However, one of the main reasons was the rejection of Soviet ideology and pseudo-Marxist interpretations of literature, which were obligatory in the Soviet times. Ideological and Marxist were considered as the same. Just at the same time, the theories with obviously ideological basis were developed in the West (feminism, postcolonialism etc.). In the middle of the nineties some Lithuanian critics have began to declare that it was necessary to return to the social contexts of literature and to read anew the literature of Soviet and post Soviet times. Postcolonial theory developed in postcolonial West was proposed as one of the most fruitful. The paper discusses the proposed juncture of a Western theory and post Soviet Lithuanian literature (and maybe - other literatures of postcomunist countries). The purpose is to find out why there are only few works in this field. As it seems, the situation is caused by many factors. They are social and cultural context, methodological limits of postcoionial theory itself and the object of research (the literature of Soviet times mostly is not very sophisticated). The fear of any ideology and fear to loose literature as a specific object of study plays a great role too. In the second part of the paper, the advantages of the postcoionial theory for the studies of Lithuanian literature are under discussion. That theory gives an opportunity to reconsider some popular conceptions (for example, the one of national character) and myths, to analyse game with authority as well as the phenomenon of the so-called Esopic language in the literature of Soviet times.
