Summary / Abstract:

ENExecutive Director of the South Carolina Council on the Holocaust and Instructor in Anthropology at Ashford University, Christine Beresniova's book Holocaust Education in Lithuania argues that teaching and learning about the Holocaust in the Lithuanian context requires a far more nuanced approach than is often offered by Western international interventions in the Baltic region. Using in-country research conducted in the Lithuanian language between 2007 and 2015, the book builds on the work of Jan Werner Müeller, Malgorzata Pakier, Joanna Wawrzyniak and myself, who call for '... more space to be allocated to the voices of those living the reality of memory reconstruction in Eastern Europe.'1 Demanding that 'the post-Soviet condition be understood on its own terms,'2 Beresniova knits together a fascinating, illuminating and sometimes provocative study which makes extensive use of oral history interviews. Her interviews with participants analyze the meaning of Holocaust education to Lithuanian and non-Lithuanian politicians, diplomats, educators and students, '... as they navigate their identities in local, national and international communities,'3 and '... attempt to make sense of the historical event in their own context.'4.
