ENThe humanities at Vytautas Magnus University developed under the conditions of open Lithuanian culture. The formation of the humanities went together with the revival of new political and social views in the system of state values. The freedom has served as a basis in the formation of the educational ideology of the university. The Russian academic ideas have been incorporated into the context of Lithuanian academic thought without any difficulty. They were implemented by the famous Russian scientists who resided in Lithuania within the period between VVW I and WW II. The only thing required from foreign scholars was to learn the Lithuanian language and to lecture in it. The majority of the scientists have accepted this requirement and consequently they joined the Lithuanian academic community. Some of them made a considerable contribution into the Lithuanian science and culture. They represented different fields of the Russian scientific thought at the beginning of the century. The most famous among them were philosophers Lev Karsavyn and Vasilyj Sazeman, philologist Mykolas Bancvichius (Michayl Podchibiakyn), and history teachers Ivan Lappo and Pavel Gronskyj. In modem approach to the dialogue and dialogues between the Lithuanian and Russian academic communities should be considered in the light of a long and rich tradition. [From the publication]
