Summary / Abstract:

ENThis paper is the author’s attempt to present some observations on the types of mistakes caused by phenomena from the second and third groups that students, whose native language is Lithuanian and who study English for Technical Purposes (EST) as a foreign language at the Technological Faculty of Šiauliai University, typically make. This should enable to establish certain guidelines for the application of the contrastive approach in teaching English. It is obvious that the scope of specialized vocabulary in teaching English for Technical Purposes is a primary goal. Technical terms often have a single, unchanging meaning. A literary writer usually has a choice of many ways of expressing notions, whereas the scientific writer has, for the most part, only one way. If a translation of a technical text is well done, looking at the two versions side by side, one would not be able to tell which version is original and which is the translation. Therefore, acquisition of technical terminology is of great significance. For many reasons, efforts to achieve the goal do not always produce anticipated results. [Extract, p. 54-55]
