ENBased on the collected sources, the author argues that the setting up of a foreign infantry regiment in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania entailed many expenses related to the recruitment of experienced soldiers, the purchase of armaments, equipment and clothing. To meet this challenge, the Lithuanian Field Hetman Krzysztof Radziwiłł and his son Janusz had to take out loans and use the available network of clientage connections. It can be assumed that they were guided by the desire to obtain royal grace, to fulfi l their duty to the king and the Commonwealth, and to prepare the ground for the political and fi nancial career of Prince Janusz. Th e biographies of both Radziwiłłs show that all the goals outlined above were achieved to varying degrees. [From the publication]
