ENThe fairy tale ATU 425M called by the Lithuanians "Žalčių karalienė" ("The Queen of serpents") and by the Latvians "Zalkša līgava" ("The wife of the serpent") is extremely popular in the folklore of the Baltic peoples (the Lithuanians gathered 182 versions of this tale and die Latvians - 87). It arouses the interest among both, the scholars in the field of folklore and mythology and the authors. This motif was extensively multiplied and appeared not only in literature, but also in die fine arts, theatre, opera or ballet. The appeal of this fairy tale is proven by the number of works relating to this motif - there are 20 in Lithuanian and 7 in Latvian literature. In the 19th century this motif was an inspiration to those who sought stories suitable for creating a national epic (Lautenbahs-Jūsmiņš); the 20th century Lithuanian poetry is characterized by a perfect exploitation of the motifs ability to transform its elements into symbols and metaphors clear for the reader.
