Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article deals with the phenomenon of lexical gaps and its related translation difficulties. Lexical gaps are cases when cultural, grammatical or other reasons result in the absence of the lexicalisation of certain concepts by lexical units such as words or fixed word groups and no direct equivalent can be found when translating. One type of lexical gaps, derivative gap, which occurs due to different morphological possibilities of naming concepts in different languages, is discussed in more detail. The article looks into how separate examples of lexical gaps are conveyed in translation dictionaries and a corpus. In the dictionaries, the lexical gap is usually expressed by means of descriptive translation or a list of synonyms. Whereas a translator tackles the problem through compensation and various translational transformations. The comparison of the data of the two sources is not the only aim of the article. Even more important is the goal to prepare and test corpus linguistics-driven lexical gaps filling methodology. In the end of the article a suggestion is put forward to correct the form of electronic dictionaries by shifting to the concept of the extended unit of meaning. Recommendations are also presented on the structure of a potential interactive translator aid that would store preplanned problematic cases processed by the methodology described in the article.
