Summary / Abstract:

ENThis is the edition of three informational processes concerning the candidates for the office of bishop of Vilnius ‒ Bernard Maciejowski (1597), Benedict Wojna (1600) and Eustachius Wołłowicz (1616). The original manuscripts and other documents, now kept at the Vatican Secret Archives (Archivio Segreto Vaticano), were transcribed by the well-known Lithuanian historian Rev. Paulius Jatulis (1915‒1995). The present edition is based on the copies kept in his personal archival fund in the Manuscript Department of the Vilnius University Library (f. 267‒775). The witnesses called in to give their testimonies have produced detailed and colourful information about the candidates’ origin and family, education, ecclesiastical career, and personal traits. These sources also provide valuable details about the status of the Vilnius cathedral, the cathedral chapter, and the city.
