ENThe church bells are valuable monuments of technology, arts and history. Lithuanian folk traditions are related to the belief in the miraculous power of the bells’ sound. Bell ringing functions are discussed as the villagers believe that they disperse stormy clouds, protect against lightning strike, prevent epidemic proliferation. Sources of such beliefs reach back to mediaeval culture and relics of the Baltic tribes’ mythologies. Topic of the national legends relates to bell submerged in the lakes’ depths and those lost in the mounds – these tales are possibly reflections of actual historical events.
