Summary / Abstract:

ENSince the end of the 19th century a great interest has been devoted to Chronograph that was studied in two aspects. Byzantium experts and historians of Slavic writings used to resort to Sovijus Myth only for the purpose of dating the record. The status of Chronograph as the most valuable source of Baltic religion and mythology has established in the Baltic studies from the very beginning. Unique folklore narrative used to be mechanically taken out from the story and studied separately from the text. Savojus Myth has been comprehended as an “insert”. Work with the manuscript persuasively demonstrates the opposite – folklore material is used here totally deliberately and consistently rather than sporadically. The subject of study in the article represents the texts about Sovijus that are found in the same Chronograph and that have not been included to the Baltic studies so far. It turned out that only a part of the folklore material is known to us, i.e. one record of folklore narrative, though, there are two of them in Chronograph. The article focuses on the conjunctive text about Sovijus in chapter 17 that precedes the well-known myth. Much attention is also paid to the reference to Sovijus in chapter 33 of Chronograph – apocryphal story about Melchizedek on the basis of which it is possible to etymologize the personal name. Language analysis allows concluding that the author conveyed not only full content but also the authentic form of the mythological story. Unique, complete and perfect record of the verbal text was determined by literary particularity of the work.
