ENThe paper makes an analysis of the investigations on recreation in sociology and geography. The author describes the problems and structure of the sociological research on recreation carried out in Lithuania between the sixties and eighties. In the first part of the paper the definition and the features, the characteristics of recreational culture are analysed. This culture is identified with the non-utilitarian activity possessing its specific values. The material of the investigations, the process of self-identification of people with the meanings of recreation is presented. In the soviet period the formation of the economic and social structures included the change of cultural models and meanings related to recreation too: earlier forms of tourism give way to commercial tourism, new meanings in the structure of the holidays are observed. The author maintains that the roots of understanding the phenomenon of recreation lie in the ideas of J. Huizinga, M. Ellis, T. Veblen, J. Dumazedier, and others. The pre-war Lithuanian philosophers and sociologists, such as V. Alantas, J. Razma, M. Jonaitis, S. Šalkauskis, Vydūnas, emphasised the importance of the vital power of people and of energetic value. The problems of sociological research on free time and recreation in the post WW II period have been investigated by the scientists A. Mitrikas, A. Kličius, J. Leonavičius, G. Matulienė, A. Vosyliūtė. In the paper the representation of some approaches and people’s meanings reflect in the results of the sociological and geographical research on recreation are analyzed. The author highlights the types of recreational activity, the features of the development of social and natural conditions for holidaymakers and recreants. The representation of recreation as a system of symbols, cultural meanings in historical materials and poetry, in language is analysed. [From the publication]
