Summary / Abstract:
ENThe article deals with the types of linguistic marking of reference to other people's speech, and with their functions. I distinguish evidential, quotative and echoic markers. Quotatives, unlike evidential, focus on verbal and non-verbal form rather than propositional content; echoic use mostly refers to imputed utterances as reflecting a certain mindset or way of thinking.
