Summary / Abstract:

ENThe paper aims to describe the origin of the Slavic conjunction i ‘and’ and its Baltic counterpart ir ‘and; also’ (Old Prussian ir ‘also’, Lithuanian ‘and; also’, Latvian ‘and; also; even’). Common Baltic ir traces back to the former *ī-r that stems from the conflation of demonstrative pronoun (instr. sg.) *h₁i-h₁ and locative postposition -r. On the basis of Baltic data we can establish the primary character of Slavic i ‘and’ which illustrates the functional change from comitative to coordinative conjunction.
