ENThe history of the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences dates back to 1775 when a three-year Teacher Training Seminary was established in Vilnius. It was one of the first institutions of higher education in East Europe that started educating secular teachers (of the Enlightenment epoch). Later, when Lithuania regained its independence, in 1935 the Pedagogical Institute of the Republic was established. These two dates are of extreme importance for those who explore the history of the university in the periods of occupation, military turmoil or the time of peace. Currently, the University aims at training teachers of a more versatile character who would be specialists of several subjects, administrators and managers of educational institutions, professionals of social work, and other type of specialists who would ensure the smooth functioning of the system of education in the Republic of Lithuania. Graduates of our university must be open to the innovations of the European (and not only!) educational experience, challenges of integration, able to reason globally and act locally, eager to help the younger generation to become more creative, socially mature, having self-respect and stating preference to humanistic ideals.
