EN[...] Saulius Šarkinas has always admitted the immense influence of the eminent world's architects on his vision. He seems to have been most impressed by Jam es Stirling and Richard Meyer. They, however, remained but distant beacons to the Lithuanian architect, in his work he had to rely on his talent and will power. When larger scale constructions came to a temporary halt, Saulius Šarkinas and his colleague had to accept minor commissions, the level of contests also dwarfed. Over this period of sluggishness, Saulius Šarkinas designed with Jolanta Barltrūnaitė, two superb residential houses in Vilnius. In both instances, he showed an exemplary command of proportion and detail, the ability to orchestrate the space and material and revealed himself as a sensitive creator. His talents and his vibrant personality merit many more pages. He applied his talent in other fields of art and design, leaving a wealth of prints in miniature, post-cards, drawings, products of graphic design. Over ten book covers produced by him for different printers took by surprise professional book artists. His architectural sketches and drawings - the chronicle of his creative thought - and ideas are amazing. Saulius Šarkinas taught the Academy of Fine Arts from 1989, and was assistant professor from 1994. Who knows, maybe his vibrant, untamed and distinct touch will be reborn in the works of his former students.
