ENProstitution in Soviet Lithuania is not investigated in Lithuanian historiography. Silence in historiography in this field is common to all the post-soviet area. Generally, prostitution became an issue of public discussion only at the dawn of perestroika. Although 15 years have passed since the beginning of glasnost only a few works have been written on the subject. This situation might have been caused by the fact that prostitution as a research subject is rather new for the historians of the region in question. Lithuanian bolshevik government having attributed prostitutes to the extremely dangerous part of the society together with the intelligentsia, political and business elite, deported them to Siberia. Soviet ideologists destroyed the data on prostitution from the official postwar Lithuanian statistical tables. The strict policy of the Soviet government in respect to unemployed prostitutes was reflected in the press that had not publicized this problem until 1959 at all. The analysis of the published articles makes it obvious that the Soviet government was primarily concerned not with the moral aspect of prostitution, that is, not with the fact that a woman sells her body. In the 60-ies prostitution acquired new features in Lithuania. In 1959-1962 the Soviet government paid attention to the increased number of women who engaged into prostitution because of their desire for imported goods. [From the publication]
