ENGoods brought into or taken out of a country illegally is called contraband. In Lithuania the history of contraband had two sides: dark and light (book spreaders). Contrabandists brought fabrics, clothes, cigarettes, tobacco, matches, tea, sugar, rum, alcohol, denatured alcohol, cognac, wine and “anodia” into Lithuania from Germany. “Anodia” is a sedative mixture of ether and alcohol. The article tells how “anodia” was drunk and eaten in the beginning of the 20th century in Western Lithuania. In the Open Air Museum there are three exhibits that have a connection with “anodia”. These canisters for bringing ether were found at Upyna (Šilalė district). After the WWII the tradition to drink “anodia” still survived.
