ENDuring the times of Independent Lithuania, in the region of Pakaunė were established not only primary, but also specialized primary and vocational education and training schools. The four-year progymnasium, in which, besides the general education classes in the fourth grade the bookkeeping course was taught, was situated in Vilkija. The lower girls’ school of agriculture was founded in Karmėlava, the first in that time in Lithuania. On the 10th of September, 1920, in Freda, Garliava District, in the former Manor of Count Jozef Godlewski, the first horticulture school was founded in Lithuania. Although the teachers of that time were suffering from various disadvantages – they often had lessons in cold and under-heated rooms, the schools lacked training aids, there was shortage of books and school supplies – they diligently fulfilled their duties, realizing that they were teaching a new generation of their nation, on which the successful future of the entire state belongs.
