ENA look at the sacral heritage of the Lithuanian provinces reveals the problems of the deteriorating condition of abandoned chapels, mostly from the period of Historicism. If the larger sacral objects of various periods – churches and monasteries – can survive thanks to the efforts taken by the state, the same cannot be said about local chapels, above all private chapels built in the former manor estates. Hypothetically we could assert that the deterioration of these objects is probably a result not only of the lack of means, but also of the absence of a strategic vision, ideological and practical guidelines of the functional shape in which these buildings could be revived. It would be useful to analyse the possibilities of rational solutions to deal with this situation. A chapel-mausoleum of the neo-romanticist style in the town of Gaurė, Tauragė district, has been chosen as the basis for research. This sacral object is presented as a witness of still unknown facts in the history of Lithuania, and architectural research is combined with the newly emerging historical facts or even legends. The basic flaws in the building’s maintenance, the consequences of neglect and the necessary urgent solutions are indicated. Alongside, the possibilities and means of reviving this building and adapting it for new purposes are discussed.
