Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article analyses dissemination of information about mediation in Lithuania via the Internet (2008–03/2016), since it is considered to be one of the most available and popular means in the digital society. In the case of selecting mediation as an alternative method of dispute resolution, the civil disputes are generally solved much faster than in court, they are less costly for the parties and the probability of re-establishing not only juridical but also social peace increases. Due to the advantages set out above, mediation is encouraged and popularised in many member states of the European Union. Although already in 2008 the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania adopted the Law on Conciliatory Mediation in Civil Disputes, this method of dispute resolution is being applied relatively rarely. Insufficient public awareness of the essence, possibilities and benefits of mediation is indicated as one of possible reasons for this. The documents concerning the development of mediation and information dissemination are reviewed in the article. The sources of information that are easily accessible via the Internet while using google.lt search engine are studied: academic works are analysed, the participation of Lithuanian legal authorities in the process of dissemination of mediation information is defined; the tendencies of interest of popular news portals in mediation are examined. The authors of scientific works in Lithuania have mainly focused on the theoretical points of legal framework of mediation and analysed the experience of other countries. The practical aspects, such as the process of implementation of mediation, the opinion of the parties having taken part in the mediation, the problems of the activities of the mediators themselves and others have not been analysed. The biggest contributor of the information about mediation as a legal institution to the society is the Lithuanian court portal. According to the form of the provision of information, the Lithuanian court e-service portal is considered to be the most attractive. The portals of Law Institute of Lithuania, the Lithuanian Bar Association and the Seimas Law and Order Committee contain almost no information about mediation. Mediation is not propagated in the portals of municipal primary legal aid services and district courts either. All the selected news portals (Lrytas.lt, Delfi.lt, 15min.lt, Alfa.lt, Diena.lt, Respublika.lt, Vz.lt) have published more or less information about mediation. Delfi.lt and 15min.lt are the most active portals. There is a tendency observed that information about mediation as peaceful means of dispute resolution is increasing.
