LTBūtinybę aukštojoje mokykloje ugdyti studentų lyderystės kompetencijas grindžia tiek mokslininkai, tiek ir pačios aukštosios mokyklos. Tačiau rasti strategiją, kuri tenkintų visų studentų poreikius ir galimybes, yra labai sudėtinga. Visgi teorinėje mokslinėje literatūroje ypatingai grindžiama praktinės veiklos ugdant studentų lyderystės kompetencijas svarba. Siekiant empiriškai pagrįsti jos svarbą, t.y. įvertinti studentų lyderystės kompetencijų pokytį praktikos metu, atliktas empirinis tyrimas taikant natūraliojo eksperimento strategiją. Tyrimo rezultatai atskleidžia, kad praktikos metu bent iš dalies sustiprėjo visos studentų lyderystės kompetencijos. Gauti duomenys leidžia lyginti ir vertinti teorinių ir empirinių tyrimų rezultatus, taip pat formuluoti kai kurias rekomendacijas efektyvesniam studentų lyderystės kompetencijų ugdymui.

ENIntensive development of leadership theory and practice in recent decades has motivated the representatives of various spheres to get interested in the idea of leadership, including the representatives of education. The interest in leadership in education is related to the issues of the quality of education. The importance of teachers leaders has especially been emphasized in recent years. In recent years there has been more and more researches done concerning the preparation of students for leadership at higher schools. The role of practice in this process has been increasingly emphasized. Due to practical relevance, taking into account the lack of scientific research the issue of change in leadership competencies of students during teaching practicum has been chosen for this research. Natural experiment strategy was chosen. 536 students participated in the research. While doing the research it has been determined that during teaching practicum all leadership competencies of students have been more or less strengthened. These results match with the strategy distinguished by C. Day (2001), C. Brungardt et al. (2006), J. P. Dugan, S. R. Komives (2007), D. Eich (2008), M. F. Cox, O. Cekic, S. G. Adams (2010) et al. and other researchers according to which leadership development is considered as practical activity during which students have an opportunity to become leaders. Thus, these research results have revealed the significance of practical activities and the importance of it to the development of leadership competencies. Due to the insights occurred from the research results it becomes possible to form some recommendations.After the theoretical and empirical reasoning of the significance of teaching practicum for the education and development of leadership competencies it is recommended for higher schools to include into the descriptions of content of teaching practicum not only the professional and general aspects, but also aspects of development of leadership competencies.
