ENThe report analyses the present Lithuanian standards of general education that are provisional and experimental because of several objective reasons: 1) old though corrected (in some cases new) programs are still used in basic schools; 2) it is the first attempt to prepare educational standards of this type in Lithuania; 3) there were no real possibilities to support the standards with consistent studies of the essence and methods of upbringing that need a lot of time and with didactic and methodical investigations of different school subjects. Most often the opinions of experts and the experience of foreign countries were used as a basis. The main function of general education standards is evaluation of the results of training. In the contemporary process or training the ideograph system of evaluation and the system of criteria are becoming popular. The essence of the system of criteria is comparison of the achievements of the pupil with very specific criteria or standards of this sphere that were foreseen beforehand. The tests are prepared according to these criteria. While formulating the tasks some specific rules must be followed: 1) the tasks are easily understandable; 2) the content and the way of carrying out the tasks are relatively new to the person under investigation; 3) they are laconic; 4) the possibility of accidental solution is minimal; 5) they are economic with respect to time and so on. The analysis of the standards of general education showed that some orders are formulated so as to admit several interpretations - "one perceives" "one distinguishes", "one understands" "one tries" "one gets used" and so on. It is difficult to say whether these verbs define the level of abilities or whether they are used in order to avoid the frequent usage of the verbs "one can do" or "one is able to do".
