Summary / Abstract:

ENThis article examines a recently discovered four-line Prussian inscription from 1440, found at the end of a copy of Paul of Venices Latin treatise Logica parva. It provides a detailed philological analysis of all its words, offers a literal translation, and presents an interpretation based on that translation. Additionally, some words and phrases are compared with earlier interpretations by other scholars. The text notes similarities between the forms in this Prussian inscription and several East Aukštaitija dialect forms. The author suggests that it is a Prussian poem, likely written between 1410 and 1422, consisting of six trochaic lines and featuring characters from Baltic mythology. The first line hints at vague realities, indicating it may be a fragment of a longer piece, possibly its ending. It is recommended to Lithuanianise the suspected author, who is of Prussian origin and identified as the Prussian Hussite, Petras Turnavas. The Cretan Prussian text serves as an important original artefact of the Prussian language.
