ENThe work analyses mainstream school teachers' ways of coping with stuttering. The hypothesis is that teachers try to help the students to get rid of stammering. The participants of the research were teachers, who work in Marijampolės district, Šiauliai city and district (Kelmė, Joniškis, Pakruojis, Radviliškis) mainstream schools; 76 teachers, working in different types of schools (kindergartens, primary, junior and senior high schools and gymnasiums) were surveyed. The questionnaire aimed at finding out in what ways mainstream school teachers gain knowledge about stammering, how they evaluate the quality of their activities in this sphere, what they notice while working with students who stammer, what methods of help they use and how they evaluate the efficiency of these methods. The teachers indicated what difficulties they faced working with a stammering child, how they solved the problems, offered their opinions about the ways they can organize help for stammering children and their parents. While analyzing the research data, attempts were made to learn about various kinds of support teachers mostly use working with stammering students during their classes and after-school activities and how they evaluate the effectiveness of the provided support. The research data revealed that teachers try to help a stammering child by using efficient ways. The teachers face various difficulties which they try to solve themselves and consult the school's speech therapist. The hypothesis was proved because the answers show that teachers use various ways of helping stammering children. One direction is to help the child maintain his/her psychological balance; the other is to help defeat stammering.
