ENThe paper discusses the perception of Henryk Sienkiewicz and the reception of his literary legacy at schools with Polish as the language of instruction, in the region of Vilnius in Lithuania (from late nineteenth-century to 2013). In order to define the local characteristics of the reception, the following aspects are discussed: views on the authors of The Teutonic Knights life and works at the various stages of school education, in textbooks and in curricula, the academic status of the artist and his influence on school, popular school-level interpretations of his works, forms of honouring the author (special sessions, jubilees, school patronage), presence of Sienkiewiczs works at school and public libraries, concrete examples of reception, and additional forms of propagation of knowledge about the writer supporting education in class. An investigation into the evolution of the changing model of perception of H. Sienkiewicz and his literary legacy at school in the region of Vilnius, including identification of non-literary factors decisive in its motives, character and rank of influence, is the primary purpose of the presented research.
