Summary / Abstract:

ENAdvancement of higher education is one of the key conditions of society development. The relationship between higher education system and labour market is ensured through students’ knowledge, abilities, competences, and skills. The first analysis of student-centred studies was carried out at the beginning of the 20th century. Sustainable development covers a number of social development areas, including the very goal of education – to develop competences that are important for personal professional growth and social activities as well as for an individual’s self-expression in a constantly changing and interconnected environment. In the context of sustainable development, student-centred studies promote the development of different learner competences, such as transformational, instrumental, social and other skills. Teacher competences are built up as well, for example, complex thinking, prospect anticipation, implementation of changes, etc. The object of the research is student-centred studies in sustainable development conditions. The aim of the research is to analyse the orientation of studies towards the students in sustainable development conditions in a modern higher education institution. The research objectives are as follows: 1) to characterise the objectives and criteria for sustainable development in Lithuania and 2) to examine the orientation of studies towards a student. The research methods: the analysis of scientific literature and documents, comparison of statistical data and table and graphical analysis. The analysis of scientific literature shows that sustainable development is the most important direction of modern development both at global and EU level. The key criteria for sustainable development include time factor (short and long term) and its structural elements or dimensions. The orientation of studies towards a student at higher education institutions is an essential driver for enhancing the expertise of labour force and increasing the involvement of medium and highly qualified employees in the labour market. This model of studies is beneficial not only for learners but also for the society as a whole.
