Summary / Abstract:

ENIn the context of current economic changes, competition and integration processes the selection of the accounting policy for tangible assets (further – TA) is currently being related to the application of creative accounting elements. The article raises a problem of how to set the TA accounting policy of an agricultural business entity and how it influences the financial position of the entity as well as to take business and investment decisions through the selected financial indicators. The purpose of this article is to discover the peculiarities of TA accounting policy formation process and possible alternatives, and to determine the influence of the selected TA accounting policies to financial indicators. In order to reach the goals of this research, the following methodological research methods were used: positive accounting theory, analysis and synthesis of the previous scientific research, logical abstraction, information comparison, case study and generation of conclusions. The results of the theoretical research show that the main factor, in order to choose the TA accounting policy, is the determination of TA valuation and depreciation method. Accordingly, agricultural business entities are suggested to choose from four alternatives that are combined from the TA valuation at cost or fair value and the calculation of TA depreciation under straight line or production method. Each alternative was examined according to the chosen financial indicators that were determined as having the most significant influence to the attractiveness of the business entity. By applying the case study method and using the actual data of an agricultural business entity, it was determined that more favorable financial position of an agricultural business entity is formed when land and buildings are valued at fair value and other TA are valued at cost while the TA depreciation is calculated under straight line or production method. The application of these TA accounting policy alternatives has a significant positive effect to debt indicators, however a negative effect to asset profitability and asset turnover indicators. Therefore, this research can be a starting point for further research in order to determine a comprehensive view on the influence of TA accounting methods to financial indicators.
