ENThe dates of May 7,1904, and December 10 of the same year are closely associated with the name of Petras Vileišis. This man had made every effort to removed the prohibition of Lithuanian press, and when this had been achieved, he started the publication of the first Lithuanian daily "Vilniaus Žinios". Petras Vileišis obtained a license for this kind of activities, founded a publishing house and teamed up the fellows for the newspaper, and, moreover, he covered all costs. The "Vilniaus Žinios" daily was an axis, around which the public life was spinning in Vilnius and even the entire Lithuania. The daily raised and spread out the idea of Lithuanian autonomy and contributed much to the foundation of Lithuanian scientific, artistic and other societies. The great are merits of the "Vilniaus Žinios" to Lithuanian standard language formation and development, also the development of Lithuanian culture and literature. Due to political disagreements and financial details, the "Vilniaus Žinios'" life was not long: on March 4, 1909, the last issue was published. [From the publication]
