ENThe article focuses on the basic reinterpretation idea of the image of Antanas Baranauskas' cultural personality phenomenon as ostensible "polonofil" in Lithuanian historical and literary consciousness. Methodical orientation in the article is on the hermeneutical philosophy and new historicism, which observes a literary text as interpretation of cultural document. Antanas Baranauskas' philosophical and political ideas are reconstructed out of his life facts and creative works: verses, poems, dialogues and letters. This article reveals the writer's Lithuanian ethnic identity reflected through his catholic thinking perspective. Antanas Baranauskas understood the national revival as fostering of Lithuanian national spiritual culture and morality relying on the unity of the Catholic Church. According to Antanas Baranauskas, Catholicism was the essential spiritual basis for the Lithuanian identity. [From the publication]
