Summary / Abstract:

ENThe review of empirical studies revealed that quite a lot of them show a positive relation between the activities of business enterprises and conventional human capital, measured by work experience gained and formal education. Studies, which analyse the relation between the business performance and unconventional human capital, measured by illegal business experience, are lacking. The article examined the links between illegal business experience, as a form of unconventional human capital, and the activities and motivation in legally operating business enterprises in the transitional economy. The studies involved 399 Lithuanian business owners. Five hypotheses were raised in the research, where (H1) and (H2) respectively verified whether the relation between illegal business experience and business operation and motivation was positive. By making an assumption that the impact of illegal business practice on the effectiveness of operation and motivation was different depending on the type of business, hypotheses were raised that the impact of illegal business experience on business operation (H3a) and business motivation (H3b) was positive and on average greater in younger entrepreneurs than the older ones and (H4a) and (H4b) respectively that it was positive and on average higher in entrepreneurs with higher education. (H5a) and (H5b) respectively that the latter relation was positive and on average greater in start-ups that enterprises established during the privatisation period. The regression analysis was used for the verification of the hypotheses.
