ENBishop Justinas Staugaitis was actively involved in public work at the end of 1905 after he had returned from Warsaw to Lithuania. He was appointed as a parish priest in Lekėčiai. However, the civil authority had not permitted the establishment of the new parish yet. Therefore Staugaitis was appointed as a vicar of Marijampolė parish where he stayed for one year. That was the year of the most intense public activity in the bishop’s biography. He started to set up a kindergarten in Marijampolė. It was the first social initiative of this kind in Lithuania. The establishment of the Education and Charity Society Žiburys (“Light”) in the beginning of 1906 is one of his most important public initiatives. Staugaitis’ social activity also includes his publicistic writing. In the period before the First World War he revealed himself as a gifted publicist and intransigent polemicist towards non-Christian authors. Bishop J. Staugaitis also organized and leaded Catholic press. In Seinai he edited the magazine Vadovas (“The Guide”) for priests. [From the publication]
