Summary / Abstract:

ENPrevious researches indicated large and constantly increasing mortality differences in post-soviet countries on a basis of age and marital status of people. Their results were predicated on independent tabulations and death records free from the connection with the population census. This article delivers mortality indicators on a basis of socio-demographic groups, calculated in connection to the data of the first general census and mortality statistics; and the comparison of mortality indicators in connection to the results of the population census in a post-soviet country and free from it. The survey data frequency array consists of the information on 140K decedents in Lithuania in 2001-2004 joined to the results of the population census of 2001.<…> Absolute mortality differences among citizens were evaluated based on the indicators of the average expected life time (according to mortality tables), and relative indicators of mortality differences among citizens (mortality ratios) were calculated based on Puasson regression simulation procedures.<…> It became clear, that mortality indicators on the basis of the education and marital status of people calculated using data free from the information of the population census were excessive in socially sensitive groups and reduced in privileged ones. <...> Thus mortality differences, previously noticed in Lithuania and possibly in other post-soviet countries, are overestimated. Inequality, which increased in 2000s, is a fact, but it might be not so large. The results of this research indicate constantly growing differences in a health state of people, but they also show the need for higher quality data.
