Summary / Abstract:

ENRelevance and novelty. Numerous research justifies a positive impact of physical activity (hereinafter: PA) on children and pupils’ quality of life: their health, wellbeing, physical capacity, and recovery of strength after mental work. Physical inactivity and a lack of exercise in adolescence is harmful to pupil’s health and tends to form an inactive lifestyle stereotype. The harm done by a sedentary lifestyle is difficult to compensate even by physical loads, especially in cases of unsystematic exercise. Hence, E. Adaškevičienė and N. Strazdienė have conducted research and related their monograph to reflect the modern educational needs. The article analyses the monograph “Education of pupilsʼ physical activity”. The current monograph is a complete work that is significant for the science of education. The monograph consists of the introduction part and seven chapters. The monograph discloses the opportunities of the PA competence development in adolescence, analyses the impact of physical inactivity on health, and highlights the characteristics of PA education in family and at school. The aim of the research was to reveal the educators’ (parents, teachers, health care specialists) views on pupils’ PA education in family and at school and to explore the PA expression characteristics and development trends in the context of the synergy of new technological developments and sedentary behaviour. In the preparation of the monograph, the following methods were used: a) theoretical research methods: analysis of scientific and methodological literature, document analysis, synthesis, abstraction, interpretation, meta-analysis, and comparison; b) empirical research methods: questionnaire surveys of pupils and parents, pedagogical experiment, interviewing physical education teachers and health care specialists; c) data analysis methods.A PA competence development programme, based on purposeful educational assistance that implies theoretical knowledge (about PA, its expression and its impact on health, identification, and signs of physical inactivity) and its understanding and a practical system of physical activity (consisting of favourite, emotional physical exercises and games, and relaxation and breathing exercises that reduce mental and physical tension), is effective and makes a positive impact on the changes in the PA competence. The research findings and conclusions complement the science of educology by new arguments on pupils’ health promotion and PA (self-) education that enable the formation of pupils’ PA competence and the optimisation of PA, which is especially relevant in the context of sedentary lifestyle and the development and dissemination of new technologies. The current monograph is a complete work that is significant for the science of Education in general and is accessible to researchers of sports pedagogy, teachers of physical education, and sports coaches. The results of the monograph open the prospect and directions of further research in the PA of children and the studying youth.
