ENThe article examines the subject of teamwork control at pre-school institutions. To reveal the current situation at pre-school institutions, quantitative research of the conditions of team work control and team leader’s characteristics was carried out. The research involved 80 leaders and 161 teachers working at pre-school institutions under Vilnius Municipality. Analysis of results indicated awide variety of teams existing today at preschool institutions. Generally, the teams were formal, that is they were initiated for a particular purpose by the institution leader, or they were non-formal, that is created spontaneously. The greater part of pre-school institution leaders (98 per cent) and teachers (83 per cent) felt that their work was more effective if they worked in team, not individually. An overview of the current situation team work control: the absence of a clear vision and jointly-adopted decisions in more than a half of pre-school institutions. Besides, institutions’ expectations were not based on coperation. What is more, the staff's involvement in management procedures and the feedback was not appreciated at pre-school institutions. Team formation and control were determined by leaders' education. As mentioned by 41 per cent of the leaders and 28 per cent of the teachers, major attention was given to the assimilation of team-forming stages. Competence was the chief characteristic of a team leader. Exploration of the change of leader's functions under team work conditions showed that pre-school institution leaders and teachers understood the team's objectives in an identical way, however, they failed to form teams for the working out of institution strategy. Problems were solved by means of consultations with all staff members; however, a kindergarten council took final decisions. On the other hand, responsibility for the institution operation results was assumed by its every employee who, among other things, was aware of the necessity of self-evaluation of its operation. This proves that team work control is absent at pre-school institutions because leaders are not ready to gear their work to the principles of modern management. [From the publication]
