Summary / Abstract:

ENThe first church in Old Aakmenė was built about 1556, and the present one – in 1907–1912. Its forms are more of neogothic style. Hhowever, there are some neobaroque architectural details. Tthis was characteristic of the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century of Llithuanian art. There are not enough historic data concerning the first church in Biržai. It is thought that its building was funded by Duke Mikalojus II Radvila in 1500. The permission to build the present church in Biržai was given in 1846. The architect of the design was Tomas Tišeckis. Church was built in 1853–1861. On June 24 1861 the bishop Motiejus Valančius consecrated it. It was funded by count Jonas Ttiškevièius. Artistic integrity is characteristic of (the style) of the church. Neobaroque forms predominate in the interior and exterior. Arrangement of the objects and their forms are characteristic of other churches of Llithuania of the second half of the 19th century.
